Parenting For the College Years

If you are a parent and intend on putting your children into college, you owe it to yourself to protect your child from the ravages of student loan debt and prepare them with effective strategies to help them avoid it. Although student loans can be a useful and sometimes necessary tool, there are altogether too many instances of students graduating with student loan debt who are forced to take on jobs outside of their field just to be able to make payments on the loans. One can also see from the daily news that a large percentage of students with loans also end up in default, ruining their credit in the process.
There are three (3) things that parents should impart into their child as early as possible, starting as early as the middle school years.
1. Place a high value in obtaining scholarships – scholarships and grants are free money, even if you saved money to spend on a college education, scholarships allow you the greatest freedom. Take the time to learn proven strategies that can assist you in maximizing on these opportunities.
2. Teach the power of self-marketing – the primary job of any scholarship agency is to effectively persuade the funding agency that you are the one to beat. Help your child to not be afraid of showcasing their uniqueness. In fact, this essential skill will be extremely helpful throughout the rest of their lives.
3. Humility – the more they naturally understand the power of cooperation, consideration and appreciation the more they will be able to attract opportunities and be in the best position possible to win awards.
I consider these to be my basics when it comes to avoiding student loan debt. When used efficiently, you can move through college with a greater sense of financial confidence and can even lead to a debt free education as well as your life being free of student loan debt.
These tips have helped many students secure enough money to fully cover tuition, fees and expenses over the course of their educational career. Help your child unlock their fullest potential and equip them with the necessary skills.
